What to keep in mind before getting your hair colored?

Taking a color plunge into your hair sounds terrifying, especially for the first-timers. It’s hard to choose the perfect shade let alone get it. But good hair color can transform your look radically. Whether going for a dark brown, platinum blonde, or deep burgundy; there are various factors that should be considered before making the big decision. To make sure you tick everything on your ‘need to know list’ and to help you avoid any sort of dye disaster we have come up with our expert guide to prep you for an amazing hair color solution. So without any delay let’s dive into it!

  • Choose your hair color wisely
  • Most Hairstylists and colorists advise staying within two shades of the color you naturally have. Especially while coloring at home, you must go only two shades darker or lighter. However, if you want a radical change such as going from brunettes to blond; you must make a salon appointment since it requires strong chemicals that are not present in at-home color kits and they will be ineffective to bring such results.

  • Don’t forget to test the color first
  • While choosing a home color kit, try to go for an organic hair color solution that has the least amount of harmful ingredients such as ammonia, alcohol, or peroxide. Since these ingredients lead to breakage and brittle hair. And after choosing your kit, make sure of doing a swatch test first in order to avoid any kind of allergic reaction. However, allergic reactions to hair color don’t happen that often, especially with organic hair color, but it is better to be safe than sorry.

  • Evaluate the maintenance before making any decision
  • Hair color demands a great amount of hair care and certain treatments among them require even more maintenance than others. Therefore, it is important to consider the amount of maintenance required while choosing your hair color. However, neutral shades or shades that are closer to your natural hair color require low maintenance and last a little longer while taking your hair color up a notch in terms of shine and richness.

  • Get your hair Hydrated before coloring
  • Moisturized smooth strands make the best canvas for applying any hair color. That’s why it would be a great decision to apply a leave-in conditioner or a hydrating hair mask before at least a day or two from changing the shade of your hair. After applying the hair color, you must continue extensive hair care by using your mask along with post hair color shampoo and other color fixing products once a week to keep your strands soft, shiny and healthy.

  • Hair Color formulas vary in duration
  • The shaft of the hair gets opened by permanent hair and embeds color deep within it to change the shade. While the color slowly fades away, it gradually grows out after approx seven to eight weeks. So the roots will need to be retouched at that point but the color which is deposited on the rest of the hair will stay. However, demi-permanent hair color deposits color around the shaft, while changing the tone of the hair. Therefore it is advisable to go for a subtle color change such as going from ash blonde to golden blonde rather than changing to the actual color.
